3 Materials + 6 Hours + 1 Vision

Here are some photos from our design challenge where we had to design an outfit made from paper, tape, and honeycomb cardboard.

Jody and Ilana start sketching ideas for our design.
The design is to reflect our design philosophy:

Design is a visual expression of modern society, bringing
your vision to a reality. Creating an innovative, inspirational,
edgy look on mainstream design.

This black capelet was a piece of inspiration that
we found in Surface Magazine.

Also from Surface Magazine, we were inspired by
these heels and how we could design and create them.

Our studio decided to create an outfit that was
unique, driven by lines and angles, and cohesive
in many ways. These were our sketches for
our design.

This is the beginning idea of how we wanted
the heels to look.

Then we found these awesome egg carton-like
pieces to complete the heel.

Above is the sketch of the heels.

This is a picture of Jody in front of the massive
amount of paper that we had to use in order to
create the skirt.

Here is a picture of Ilana holding the heel
before she became Lady GaGa's clone.

Above is Jody playing dress-up with the
huge shoulder pads.

Viola! The beginnings of the skirt!
This was quite a long process of making sure
that the skirt covered Ilana as well as not
making it overly creased.

Ilana modeling the first incision (diagonal cut)
into our the skirt.

Cutting the back of the skirt so that
it matches the angle of the front.
This was hard to do since we couldn't
take the skirt off of Ilana.

The skirt and capelet are completed (roughly).
Ilana is uncomfortable... you can tell by her big
smiles! =]

This is the process of placing masking
tape on the cut out of the large collar.
We were super excited that the collar
turned out so well.

Above is a sideview of the completed
piece.

The collar and strong angles turned
out great. She looked killer on the
runway.

Haha! The left shoe took a dive and fell
apart post-runway. It just kind of collapsed.

This experience was a lot of fun. We created a 3 piece outfit from scratch, laughed at a lot of different ways certain pieces had turned out, and learned a lot about how people on Project Runway feel with the time counting down to the last second.

More to come! Stay tuned... Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel!

  1. This project was so fun. I felt like I was on project runway...lol. To actually make something from raw materials such as paper and tape, was not as easy as i thought. Many constraints with this project, but my team rocked it out!!!
